Not leaving on a jet plane

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

So, would you rather spend $200K on a home or an airplane? To live in of course. This guy chose a 727.

What does it cost?: I paid $100K for the aircraft. But I think retired 727-200’s are significantly lees expensive now. The costs of staging site rent, wing and tail removal, moving, and other logistics will total slightly over another $100K. So the project total will be a bit over $200K.

Why not just live in a stick house like everyone else?: The practical reasons: I don’t mean to offend, but wood is in my view a terrible building material. It biodegrades - it’s termite chow. And microbe (rot) chow. Or it’s firewood. It just depends upon which happens first. It’s a relatively weak material, and it’s secured with low tech fasteners using low tech techniques. And traditional rectangular designs are inferior structurally - they unreasonably sacrifice strength for boxy ergonomics (geodesic structures solve this problem at least). Rectangular stick homes can’t withstand sever winds or severe earthquakes, they frequently kill people when they explode into flames, they’re easily broken into by burglars, they’re leaky, and they degrade quickly. On the positive side, they are relatively economical to build (although geodesic homes are too).

Daily Dancer

Friday, September 23rd, 2005

Okay this is pretty much as awesome of a site you can come across. This guy is “a software developer who loves to dance. Three days a week, I post a new video of me dancing to a different song.” He has a girlfriend who controls the music and the taping. He has gone to hip hop dance classes.

Without further ado, two of my favs:

Carnival

Monday, September 19th, 2005

The Federal Emergency Management Agency leased the 1,452-passenger Holiday and two other vessels from Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines for six months for $192 million

FEMA spokeswoman Lynne Keating said the new Katrina passengers volunteered to leave the shelters in the Pascagoula area. About 150 arrived Sunday, but it’s unclear how many more will come.

Keating said the goal is to empty the Red Cross shelters in Jackson County. Red Cross spokeswoman Rosemary Byrne in Biloxi said there were 233 people in three shelters in the county before the ship began accepting them.

Note: Assuming all 3 ships are the same size, that’s 64M for each ship. Divide by 6 months and you have 10.6 for the Holiday for each month. Divide that by a max of 1452 passengers and you have a cost of $7,346 for each passenger. A typical 5 day cruise ranges from $400-$800 per person. Carnival will save even more money by not using fuel for these 6 months.

That means FEMA is shelling out more than $44,000 per person. Why not just buy them a house? A family of three can buy a pretty decent house for $132,000.
